PRACTICAL GUIDE

How to use Word Counter with a clear next step.

Paste the draft you will actually publish or present. Read words, characters, sentences, and estimated reading time together, then trim the opening if the count is past the limit you care about.

Count words, characters, sentences, and reading time. Use the exact text that will be submitted, including headings when the destination counts them. A short email, an academic abstract and a social caption may apply different counting rules, so compare the relevant destination’s instructions with the metrics shown here. Hyphenated terms, numerals and unusual spacing can be handled differently by other editors; a small difference is a reason to verify the convention, not to assume one system is broken. Review the opening, repeated phrases and long explanations before cutting essential qualifications merely to meet a target. Reading time is a planning signal: dense instructions and unfamiliar technical words can take longer than a simple narrative with the same count. If pasted text includes navigation, citations or hidden copied content, remove only the parts the actual submission excludes and count again. Keep the previous draft while editing so you can restore a necessary sentence. When the count looks surprising, try a short known sample and inspect spaces and line breaks. The tool measures text; it does not establish quality, originality, readability for a particular audience or compliance with a publisher’s separate rules.

HOW THE RESULT WORKS

Counts are taken from the text in this tab. Reading time is an estimate from word count, not a promise of how fast a specific reader will finish.

THREE USEFUL SCENARIOS
01

Check a blog post against a brief that asks for 800–1,000 words.

02

See character count before a form with a hard limit.

03

Estimate reading time for a script or announcement.
